But as with all my other venture into medium format photography, there is bound to be something faulty with the camera. I really hope that is not the case with this camera though at first glance the 80mm lens is not as clean i would have liked. Will need to send the lens to cleaning up the fungus soon.

My return to medium format photography

July 29, 2010  |  Blog  |  No Comments

Friends close to me will know how much i love medium format. Late last year, i made the painful decision to sell off my Mamiya AFD and Leaf digital back to free up some cash for personal reasons. Now that I am celebrating my graduation, i am ready to make my grand return to the world of medium format... less the digital back.

Photography outing at Singapore Garden Festival

July 18, 2010  |  Blog  |  No Comments

Ever since my first visit to the Singapore Garden Festival back in 2008, i told myself that i definitely should return to the event, which takes place once every two years. Back then, i went in with a Canon EOS 40D and EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L but this year, i downgraded then lens to a 50mm f/2.5 compact macro and upgraded the camera to Canon EOS 5D. Also in my camera bag was the recently-purchased ring light.

Some of my favourite photographers (part 2)

July 15, 2010  |  Blog  |  4 Comments

This post is a continuation from my previous entry on my list of favourite photographers. And Michael Kenna is high on that list because his work inspires me... to the extent i picked up a wide angle to give landscape photography a shot (pun not intended). But you really have to give it to Kenna. Throughout his career, he stay loyal to his Hasselblad, shooting only 6x6 black and white format for all his shots. Hell, his works are so popular, IKEA actually bought the shot above for mass production to go along with sales of picture frames.

Some of my favourite photographers (part 1)

Because this stupid wordpress theme insist i put a picture on top, here's a photo taken way back in 2008 with a Canon 40D and EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L. Lately I feel very uninspired, so much that i started looking at some of my favorite photographers' work to re-connect myself with photography. Since I'm at it, i might as well present you my list of photographers who, in one way or another, inspired my approach to photography.

One, i didn't win. Two, that's me in a storm trooper helmet. Three, you can't wear specs in a storm trooper helmut. But when you add free food, free-flow BEER, a former-but-disqualified beauty queen to the mix, you get a pretty awesome day at Movidas.

iPhone with a DSLR lens

July 9, 2010  |  News  |  No Comments

Just saw this on cyberspace. I highly doubt i will sell my Canon 5D and spend the rest of my life shooting with this setup, though it is an interesting thought to pair the iPhone4 with a macro lens for flower shooting. Hmmmmm. What do you think?

Improve photographs with foreground, middleground & background

July 8, 2010  |  Blog  |  No Comments

You may have seen this photo in my post about my final-year project. But it also happens to have the elements that i would like to talk about. When i first started taking photos back in 2005, i went for a talk by local fashion photographer Geoff Ang. And one of the most important lessons that i walked away from that talk was using FMB (Foreground, Middleground & Background) to improve composition.
