Improve photographs with foreground, middleground & background
You may have seen this photo in my post about my final-year project. But it also happens to have the elements that i would like to talk about.
When i first started taking photos back in 2005, i went for a talk by local fashion photographer Geoff Ang. And one of the most important lessons that i walked away from that talk was using FMB (Foreground, Middleground & Background) to improve composition.
Some of the more seasoned photographers reading this (if any) will know what i am talking about. But this post is not meant for pros like you
Good usage of FMB, like Rule of Thirds, helps to make your photo interesting and in some cases add a layer of story-telling to it. It also gives your photo a sense of depth.
Now look at the photo above and let’s identify the FMB:
- Foreground: the wired fencing, which is out-of-focused
- Middleground: the insane number of chickens
- Background: the chicken farmer
Now, compare the photo with the following shot:
What do you think?
Now, as an exericse, here are photos with FMB elements. See if you can identify the elements or not.
*As and when i have more photos, i will post em here.
Ok I don’t really have that many photos to showcase. But Hopefully this will get you thinking about how to improve some of your photos using Foreground, Middleground and Background.
