My return to medium format photography

July 29, 2010  |  Blog  |  No Comments

Friends close to me will know how much i love medium format. Late last year, i made the painful decision to sell off my Mamiya AFD and Leaf digital back to free up some cash for personal reasons. Now that I am celebrating my graduation, i am ready to make my grand return to the world of medium format... less the digital back.

Photography outing at Singapore Garden Festival

Ever since my first visit to the Singapore Garden Festival back in 2008, i told myself that i definitely should return to the event, which takes place once every two years. Back then, i went in with a Canon EOS 40D and EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L but this year, i downgraded then lens to a 50mm f/2.5 compact macro and upgraded the camera to Canon EOS 5D. Also in my camera bag was the recently-purchased ring light.

Epic fail attempt at trying to compare the various image processing software

The above image was quickly adjusted to test the performance of the Hasselblad Phocus 2.5 for mac. Here are some rough adjustments i did:

  • Increase exposure by one stop
  • increase contrast by 50 pts
  • decrease saturation by 30 points
  • sharpen until.. well.. it looks sharp
Pretty much that's it. Then i got curious becasue i also happen to have Adobe Camera Raw, Aperture 3 and Canon's own Digital Photo Professional. So i did a very very very rough edit using the same set of adjustments on the same image.

Comparing ring light with post production

Comparing ring light with post production

Basically what i tried to do here was to eliminate ambient light on the background to make my flowers punch out. That is why the background has a lot of shadow as if it was shot in the night. So here i have two ways of doing it: with post-production and shooting with ring-light ----> which allows me to kill off ambient light on the background and illuminate the flower with ring light instead.

Controlling your light ratio in flower shots (Part a)

I may be new to flower photography, but i do know a thing or two about lighting. Which is why you will realize that my flowers have some degree of controlled lighting ratio. Now, what if i told you the lighting ration was created via Photoshop? But on second thought, it might not be as 'wahhhhh' as i would expect.

Macro flowers and their location

April 7, 2010  |  Blog  |  No Comments

As the late war photographer Robert Capa once said, if your shots are not good enough, they are not close enough. His words of wisdom have pretty much been my guiding light where flowers are concerned. Plus, since there are people who actually care, i shall reveal the locations where some of my recent flower (and plants) macro shots are taken. This (above) one for example, was taken along the roads outside of CHIJMES, facing Rafflescity.
