Back to Little India after four years

January 29, 2012  |  Blog  |  No Comments

When I got started with photography, I regarded Little India as my training ground of sorts to improve my craft.

Armed with a Yashica GSN (rangefinder for poor people like me), I walked around the streets to talk to people and ask for their permission to take a portrait of them. It was a very rewarding time for me back then as I had learn a lot in terms of approaching your subjects.

Fast forward four years later, I was having midnight coffee with a few friends on Chinese New Year day and we decided to hit the streets of Little India for a short photo walk.

Lydia and Shuohan on Portra 400 and Mamiya 645 AFD II

December 23, 2011  |  Blog  |  No Comments

I'll make no secret that I am quite the fan of Jose Villa and his approach to wedding photography, shooting exclusively on film and such.

So when Lydia and Shuohan came knocking on my door to help them with their ROM shoot, I jumped at the opportunity. It got better when Lydia was willing to experiment with film for the shoot.

Photographing the Korean dance group sure tested my lighting skills

December 4, 2011  |  Blog  |  No Comments

The brief was simple: photograph a group of Korean dancers on a white backdrop so that there's an option to edge them out if necessary.

But the first question that popped into my mind: Where the fuck do I find a studio big enough to photograph six girls against a white backdrop?

November 20, 2011  |  Blog  |  No Comments

That's not me in the picture with the Korean dance group. Rather a friend who had asked for my help with a shoot since he had limited budget.

I normally would reject such work from other people but since he's a friend and got my studio/camera rental costs all covered I told myself "why not"?

When the right camera meets the right photographer

October 23, 2011  |  Blog  |  2 Comments

Inspired by a post by Kirk Tuck and news of Canon's EOS 1D X, I have decided to write this entry which has been on my mind for a while.

Sure. The Canon 1D X is a monster with 14 frames per second shooting at ISO beyond 102400 at 18 megapixels. However, how many of you truly need such a performance? Be honest with yourself on that.

Is there a place for a Sony Nex C3 in my camera bag?

October 10, 2011  |  Blog, Reviews  |  10 Comments

I have never owned an Electronic Viewfinder Interchangeable Lens (EVIL) camera until the folks at Sony came along and asked if I am interested to do a review of the Sony Nex C3.

I did have some hands on with the Olympus EP-3 (and EP-2) and the Fuji X-100 prior to this and was feeling quite good about comparing the Nex C3 to them.

That plan, however, went down the drain when I realized that all other big boys like DPreview and Digital Photographer School already  wrote excellent reviews about the camera.

Therefore it was really pointless to write a matter of fact review and I decided to take a different angle when writing this entry.
